12 Things We Grew Up Thinking Were True That Are Actually Myths
Swallowed Gum Stays in Your Stomach for 7 Years
Many of us were warned as children not to swallow gum because it would supposedly stay in our stomachs for seven years. This myth likely originated from the fact that gum isn’t easily digested. While it’s true that gum doesn’t break down like other foods, it doesn’t stay in your stomach for seven years. Your digestive system is efficient at moving things along, and gum usually passes through and exits your body within a few days.
Doctors explain that our gastrointestinal tract is well-equipped to handle gum. Although it might take longer to digest than other foods, digestive enzymes eventually break it down. Even so, swallowing gum frequently is not advisable, as it can lead to gastrointestinal blockages, especially in children. The myth likely persisted because parents believed it was an effective way to discourage kids from swallowing gum. While the intention was good, the science just doesn’t support this age-old warning.
